The IRS is sending out warnings of a PHONE SCAM in which victims, especially senior citizens and immigrants are informed that they owe delinquent taxes and demand payment immediately. The scammers who are making the phone calls are threatening the seniors with arrest, deportation, or suspended driver's license if payments are not made according to the San Bernardino County Department of Aging and Adult Services.
"The scammers demand payment through pre-paid debit cards or wire transfers. In some cases the scammers have tampered with caller ID making it appear that the calls are coming from the IRS. The scammers pose as police officers, U.S. Citizenship and immigration services representatives. Some are posing as IRS officials demanding payment."
"The truth is the IRS usually contacts people by mail - not by phone - about unpaid taxes." According to an IRS statement. "And the IRS won't ask for payment using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer."
The IRS issued the following advice to avoid becoming of victim of fraud:
PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU SHOULD RECEIVE A CALL FROM A SCAMMER WHO PREYS ON SENIORS.
